I was frustrated with him for his breaking up with Lyra in the beginning but I could see his reasoning behind it. This is a great little book on the localities and mineralogy of the Black Hills. Stout also stole the plot of Bad for Business for the first Wolfe novella, called Bitter End.I'd recommend reading the entire Wolfe series before this book, but for a Rex Stout fan, it still has considerable interest. Most of Porter's 'battles' are with lightly armed and quick-to-surrender British whalers, and even the culminating battle with the Royal Navy is a foregone conclusion, for Porter's Essex was outnumbered and heavily outgunned.
